Executive Summary & Annotated Bibliograhpy: Texas Schooling
Attaching multiple documents of what is required by professor. Choose from any one of the 7 topics. 5 pages double spaced for executive summary. 6 pages for annotated bib, one for each source. Thanks.
Annotated Bibliographies: the annotated bibliography for your paper you MUST follow these requirements.
Go to the “Executive Summary” file and see which topic interests you the most. Select a topic or one that falls within the scope of one of the topics. From there find threesources that address your chosen topic. One source MUST be an academic source and the other two are of your choosing. For each source you are to have the source citation (of course using MLA) and then answer the following questions (and also keeping the format). There is also an example document that you can use.
- Summarize: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? The length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is. 1 paragraph
- Assess: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source? 1 paragraph
- Reflect: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research and/ or our class. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument or your knowledge of our course? How can you use this source in your paper or in class? Has it changed how you think about the topic? 1 paragraph
Why should I write an annotated bibliography?
To learn about your topic: Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent preparation for a paper and it helps students do work BEFORE a paper is due. Just collecting sources for a bibliography is useful, but when you have to write annotations for each source, you’re forced to read each source more carefully. You begin to read more critically instead of just collecting information. Writing an annotated bibliography can help you gain a good perspective on what is being said about your topic. By reading and responding to a variety of sources on a topic, you’ll start to see what the issues are, what people are arguing about, and you’ll then be able to develop your own point of view.
To help other researchers: Extensive and scholarly annotated bibliographies are sometimes published. They provide a comprehensive overview of everything important that has been and is being said about that topic. You may not ever get your annotated bibliography published, but as a researcher, you might want to look for one that has been published about your topic.
A works cited is a list of sources (books, journals, websites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic and has directly referenced in the body of their paper.
An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation.
What happens if I change my mind on a topic or my sources?
It is absolutely okay if you do not use the same source from this assignment towards your paper. You absolutely can but if you find better sources or change the direction of your topic that is okay! Students are not required to commit to a topic and as long as you are writing about something that is within the purview of one of the topics with in the Executive summary I do not need to approve it. Should you want to do something different you will need to clear it with me by sending me an email with your intended topic and how it relates to our class. If I do not receive an email from you, and I do not approve the topic, you will automatically receive a zero.
